Discussion of Firms Using Scrum

This page is to discuss the information on this page --> Firms Using Scrum.

In my opinion, anyone who wants to draw inferences from the list of "Firms Using Scrum" information should be very careful in doing so.  Think carefully for yourself.   For example: Don't use this list to go to your boss and say "We should do Scrum solely because all these firms are 'doing Scrum'."   I think you should use Scrum (if you have some real courage), but that should not be the reason.  (Apologies if this is too obvious and sounds preachy.)

We have not identified a method to independently verify whether any firm is "really" using Scrum "safely, well, and with benefit", much less attempted to do so.

It is certain that: firms use Scrum differently, with varying degrees of success, and at least some do not do it well in the opinion of others.  Several people have questioned whether the firms listed (or how many of the firms listed) are "really" doing Scrum.  I am not aware of any specific firms on the list that they have questions or doubts about.  The "doubters" have real experience as a basis for their opinion that some firms (possibly but not necessarily some firms on the list) do not really "use Scrum" in the sense that we want that to mean.

Comments

1. The information is from many sources. One is that someone at the firm self-reports that the firm is using Scrum.

2. A listing does not imply that a firm uses only Scrum or Agile. Many firms are still using Waterfall as well (however they brand that). So, perhaps you will see comments on the extent of adoption of Scrum/Agile for a given firm.

3. A listing does not imply that the firm, internally or externally, will say "we are using Scrum". Often they are more likely to say, in conversation, "we are using Agile". Which may mean only Scrum or Scrum plus other flavors of Agile (such as XP). They might themselves ""brand" what they are doing with their own name (eg, "We are doing {IID}."), where IID is any of a thousand ways of saying iterative and incremental Development.

4. A listing does not imply that every firm is necessarily doing Scrum "right". Or well. Or even half-way sensibly.  I think virtually all are making a sincere effort to "do it right", by their own lights.

5. We are trying to get more confirmation of the information. Your efforts to support that are appreciated.

6. Based on recent experience (~Jan '07), I (Joe Little) believe there are many more firms using Scrum than are listed here.

7. Based on experience, there are many more Scrum "sites" or firm subsidiaries that are also using Scrum than are generally indicated on list.

8. We encourage you to use this information to foster the "cross-border" Agile community (eg, across corporate boundaries). And meet face-to-face to share experiences implementing Scrum and Agile.
